McKinney, Texas
If you are looking to live in a city that combines modern development with historical charm, then McKinney, Texas is the place for
you. Established in 1848, McKinney is named after the famous Texan, Collin McKinney, one of the five men who drafted the Texas
Declaration of Independence. McKinney is both the largest city in Collin County, 136 square miles, and one of the fastest growing
cities in the United States. In 2005, McKinney welcomed its 100,000th resident and is projected to reach a population of over
300,000 people once it is fully developed. McKinney is located about 30 miles north of Dallas and can be easily reached by using
U.S. Highway 75.
One of the nicest things about McKinney, Texas is its down-home country feel. Downtown McKinney has a historical square that
offers a unique variety of antique stores and small cafes including the Antique Company Mall and the Estate Antique Mall. The
old Collin County Courthouse, which was built in 1876 and used as a courthouse until 1979, has been renovated into the McKinney Performing
Arts Center. Downtown McKinney also has a few other historical buildings that have been used in Hollywood productions including
the old jailhouse.
McKinney also offers a nice selection of outdoor activities. If you are into golf you can play one of the many challenging golf
courser McKinney has to offer including the newly built TPC at Craig Ranch. For the nature enthusiasts, there is the Towne Lake
Recreation Area and the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary. Both feature biking and hiking trails to help you
enjoy plant and animals that are indigenous to North Texas. If you are into sports, the are the Ballfields and Soccer Fields at Craig
Ranch. No matter what your interests are, McKinney is the place for you.
The Collin County Regional Airport features a 7,000 foot runway that can accomodate many of the largest general aviation aircraft.
It has a large lobby and reception area, onsite car rental, a flight school, a pilot shop, and U.S. Customs clearance. It is
home to a growing number of corporate flight departments including Texas Instruments and EDS.
Built in 1876, the Old McKinney Courthouse is newly renovated and now home to The McKinney Performing Arts Center. This 480
seat facility has state of the art equipment and features ballet, theater, and other performing arts events.
The Heard Natural Science and Wildlife Sanctuary features a nice refuge from the fast growing developments of North Texas. This
peaceful part of town has a wildlife preserve, a variety of hiking trails, various exhibits, and a nature store. A great place
to see North Texas plants and animals in their natural habitat.
