The city of Plano, Texas was officially incorporated in 1873, but the land was settled on by mill-workers in the early 1840s. The residents called the city Plano, which they incorrectly believed to be the Spanish word for plain, as a reference to the terrain
of the area. Today, Plano is the largest city in Collin County and is ranked as one of the top places to live in the Dallas/Fort
Worth Metroplex. It is home to over 245,000 residents and its 72.5 square miles of land is fully developed, with the exception
of a few small areas.
What makes Plano such a great place to live is its quality of lifestyle, environmental initiatives,
and its opportunities for economic development. Because of this, Plano has become the hometown choice for a number of large
corporations, such as, JCPenny, Frito-Lay, EDS, Dr. Pepper, and Alcatel. The Plano Independent School District is recognized
as one of the finest public school systems in the nation and Plano’s high schools are renowned for sending their students to the top
universities in the country. Plano is also served by an efficient transportation system that provides easy access to every part
of the city. Included in this system are U.S. Highway 75, The North Dallas Tollway, The President George Bush Turnpike, and
State Highway 121. Plano is also part of the DART light rail system that provides public transportation to other parts
of the Dallas area.
Plano, Texas also provides fun and activities for everyone. If you are into the outdoors, Plano has
80 park sites, 40 miles of recreational trails, two municipal golf courses and six recreation centers. Holding true to North
Texas tradition of fine shopping, Plano also offers the new Shops at Willow Bend, a unique mall experience that features high class
shops and restaurants. Downtown Dallas is just 20 miles to the south and Plano is also near Frisco and McKinney, two entertaining
places to visit in their own right.
Attracting weekend crowds in excess of 100,000 people, the Plano Balloon Festival is Texas' largest balloon event. It takes
place on the third weekend in September and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for over 20 local charities.
A true Texas legend, Southfork Ranch is the setting for the 80's hit television show Dallas. This famous facility offers over
63,000 square feet of indoor event space, 10 ballrooms, and guided tours over acres of Texas farmland.
The Shops at Willow Bend mall is billed as "Your Fashion Playground". The secret behind this wonderful shopping experience
is not the variety of classy shops and cafes, but the architecture that creates a sense openness and comfort.
